Health & Safety

The Chamber of Mines works with Government, labour and Small Scale Miner organisations to ensure that mining operations cause no harm or injury to those working in mines. This is done through encouraging mines to develop and implement safety, occupational health and environmental systems at their operations. In this regard the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe works with the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development’s Mining Engineering Department that is responsible for the safety and health inspectorate function. It works with National Social Security Authority which is the lead agency for occupational health and safety in the country. In addition it works with the Environmental management Agency the national authority on environmental management.

Industrial Relations

As with all industries/undertakings in Zimbabwe labour/industrial relations are governed by legislation on the one hand and practical usage on the other. The legal aspect deals with certain conditions and standards that must be followed through the various pieces of legislation that are in force, while the implementation and general administration of the legislation is a more personal matter that differs not only from mine to mine, but in many cases from person to person. For example some companies have large well structured, but perhaps rather inflexible systems where all labour related issues are dealt with strictly in accordance with a code of practice, while others have a more relaxed, flexible attitude that allows scope for innovative solutions.
